Position description

Head of CDL Shared Cataloging Program
Metadata Services Program, UC San Diego Library

The University of California San Diego Library seeks motivated, creative and collaborative applicants to join the Library as the Head of the Shared Cataloging Program (SCP), a California Digital Library (CDL) Unit based in the Metadata Services Program at UC San Diego. This position will provide metadata expertise and oversight for CDL licensed or selected open access electronic collections from a wide variety of disciplines.

Responsibilities of the Position

Primarily under the direction of the program director for the Metadata Services Program (MS) at the UC San Diego Library, and receiving work direction from the the Assistant Director of Systemwide Licensing and Collection Services at CDL, the head of the CDL Shared Cataloging Program (SCP) provides leadership for, and management of, bibliographic data to the ten UC campuses for shared licensed and selected open access electronic resources, provides general oversight and coordination of operations, workflows, and special projects and promotes the continuous improvement of work processes and staff development. The Head of SCP also provides direct supervision to two staff members, coordinates the work of two librarians, and indirectly oversees student employees. The position will actively participate in the CDL Electronic Resource Team efforts on determining the strategies and best practices of effectively and efficiently managing electronic collections.

• Catalogs and has primary responsibility for coordinating and supervising the Shared Cataloging Program’s daily operations, including but not limited to original cataloging, copy cataloging, and batch processing of eBooks, eJournals, databases, datasets, streaming audio and video.
• Applies a strong understanding of the UC library system (Alma) collaborative network structure to be able to evaluate/determine the effectiveness and efficiency of cataloging tasks to be performed.
• Collaborates with the CDL E-Resource Team (ERT) and SCP catalogers on managing/maintaining CDL data (bib records, portfolios, collection level inventories, etc.).
• Sets priorities, coordinates and manages the development and implementation of metadata strategies that support the discovery of CDL licensed and selected open access electronic collections.
• Serves as a representative to several UC groups to communicate and/or discuss with UC stakeholders on cataloging priorities and/or any cataloging issues/decisions.
• Supervises, trains, and sets direction for the SCP Unit metadata staff and students.
• Leads the unit to investigate, experiment with, and implement new approaches and/or batch processes for creating and manipulating bibliographic data, including extended and creative uses of metadata and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).
• Shares leadership, strategic direction and management responsibility for the Metadata Services Program (MS) as part of the MS Unit Heads Group.
• Provides intellectual leadership and contributes nationally to the development of emerging cataloging standards and maintains currency with issues in bibliographic and authority control, information organization, and metadata encoding standards.
• Serves on Library-wide, Campus-wide, and UC System-wide committees.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• MLS/MLIS or equivalent advanced degree. Other appropriate degree and equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services may be substituted.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of e-book and e-serial collection packages, access, terminology, technology, and metadata as well as library data transformation techniques and software tools sufficient to provide general oversight and coordination of operations, workflows, and special projects.
• Demonstrated experience cataloging original, copy, and batch processing of bibliographic records of electronic collections using Resource Description & Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), LC Classification, and MARC-21 format and familiarity working with non-MARC metadata formats.
• Demonstrated experience successfully managing staff and providing collaborative and inclusive leadership with peers and direct reports.
• Evidence of contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education and libraries and demonstrated proficiency working in a collaborative, dynamic and culturally diverse environment.

Preferred qualifications

• Demonstrated advanced knowledge of the Alma library services platform collaborative network structure in order to engage in strategic analysis, planning, and decision-making related to the effective and efficient management of batch loading, import profiles, deletions, and global editing of bibliographic records within the Alma Network Zone (NZ).
• Demonstrated experience working in large library organizations or consortia.
